Whether we like it or not LOAD SHEDDING is a reality which will be with us for the foreseeable future. The way I see it is we, as South Africans, have two choices – accept the reality for what it is and do our bit to improve the situation or complain and point fingers and achieve absolutely nothing. In fact, this second option will only make our problems worse. In reality, we have no choice but to step up to and face these challenges. Fortunately, it is not that difficult or complicated for us to make a massive difference to the stabilization of the national electricity grid. Put Simply – using less electricity results in less load shedding.

Facts:

• If each household in South Africa switched off one light that would save 835MW.
• If all households in South Africa changed their light bulbs from incandescent and halogen downlights to LED bulbs this would save 765MW.
• South Africa has an estimated 675 000 swimming pools. If each pump ran just one hour less per day that would save 506MW.
• If all South African households reduced their geyser settings to 60 degrees Celsius and switched off their geysers when not in use this could save over 1000MW.

SAVINGS OF OVER 3 106MW (or the equivalent of over 2 million average home’s electricity consumption)

Solution:

• Reduce your pool pump timer by 1 hour and if possible set it to run during non-peak times.
• Change your light bulbs to LED. See our vast range of LED light bulbs.

• Encourage your family, staff and friends to not leave lights on in areas which are unoccupied.
• Make use of dimmer switches and motion sensors.
• Reduce the thermostat temperature of your geyser to 60 degrees. Install timers or a Geyser Wise controller to keep geysers off when not needed.
• Carefully manage the use of high consumption appliances such as tumble dryers, ovens, heaters, kettles etc
• If possible, convert your stove to gas. (Braai more ????)
• Don’t use underfloor heating.
• Ensure aircon units are regularly serviced and not in direct sun. Maintain the temperature settings at between 21 and 25 degrees Celsius.
